Genie Cable & Drum Replacement: The Dallas Owner’s Guide

Genie cable and drum replacement in Dallas typically runs $130 – $250 installed, and most jobs are done the same day we look at the door. The cable is the braided steel line that runs up the side track and wraps around the drum, and the drum is the spool up top that feeds it out evenly as the door moves. When either fails, you’ll usually hear it before you see it: a loud snap, then the door hangs crooked, one side higher than the other, and won’t move without grinding.

Most homeowners in Dallas discover the problem on a Monday morning when the door won’t open and the car is still inside. The cable itself is under constant tension. Every open and close cycle winds and unwinds it around that drum. Over time, the strands fray, the drum collects a groove where the cable rides, and one day the whole thing lets go. It’s rarely a mystery when it happens. The door tells you.

We’re Marcus Ellery and the crew at Bramwell Garage Doors Dallas. We keep Genie-compatible cables and drums for most residential models on the truck, so when we show up, we’re usually making the repair that visit, not scheduling a second one.

Which Genie Models This Applies To

This page covers cable and drum replacement for Genie residential sectional doors built in the last 25 years or so. That includes the IntelliG series, the ReliaG series, the older Pro series, and the common SilentMax and ChainMax lines. The opener name matters less here than the hardware on the door itself. Genie has used several different drum styles over the years, and the cable length varies depending on door height, typically 7 feet for most Dallas garages but 8 feet in some newer builds across Collin and Denton counties. That’s a real difference: an 8-foot door needs a longer cable and a different drum rotation, and installing a 7-foot cable on an 8-foot door is the kind of mistake that fails within weeks.

Every Genie door has a data plate on the inside of the door section or the track. If you can snap a photo of it, we can confirm the right part before we even roll the truck. The compatibility gotcha with Genie specifically is the drum shape. Some Genie doors use a tapered drum that changes cable speed as the door lifts, not a straight cylinder. If someone swaps in a generic drum of the right diameter but the wrong taper, the door lifts unevenly and the cable walks off the spool. We see that on doors that were “repaired” in the past by someone guessing at the part. It’s fixable, but it’s easier to do it right the first time.

OEM Genie parts are available and usually the right call for doors under 10 years old. For older doors where the OEM part has been discontinued, we stock quality aftermarket drums and cables machined to the same spec. We’re an independent Dallas garage door company, not a Genie dealer, which means we can be honest about when the OEM part matters and when it doesn’t.

Signs Your Genie Cable & Drum Replacement Is Failing

Here’s what we hear from Dallas homeowners when a Genie cable or drum is on the way out:

  • The door hangs crooked or stops halfway up. One cable has likely slipped or snapped, leaving the other side to carry the entire door. The door jams because the track is now fighting itself. Continuing to operate it like this bends the track and can pull the rollers out of the hinges.
  • You can see frayed strands or a gap in the cable. This is the most reliable warning sign. The cable is a braided steel rope, and when individual strands start poking out, the cable is losing strength. It’s not going to get better. In Dallas heat, we also see cables that have corroded from humidity cycling and sitting against the metal track.
  • A loud bang from the garage, then the door won’t move. That’s the cable snapping under tension. If the door was moving, the sudden release can whip the cable pretty hard. Keep people and pets away from the tracks until it’s looked at.
  • The door rises unevenly or shudders as it opens. If the drum has a worn groove, the cable won’t wind smoothly. The door might open, but it jerks side to side because the cable is slipping in the groove and catching again. Left alone, the cable wears faster and eventually fails.
  • You see visible wear on the drum, like a scored groove or loose cable wraps. When the cable doesn’t wind neatly, it stacks in piles on the drum and rubs against the side of the drum housing. That friction wears the cable and the drum together. A worn drum will eat a new cable within a year, which is why we replace them as a pair.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Dallas, a Genie cable and drum replacement typically runs $130 – $250 for a standard residential door, parts and labor included. If the door has eight-foot panels, or if the drum style is one of the tapered units we mentioned earlier, expect the job to land at the higher end of that range. If the door has two cables and both drums need replacement, most are priced as a pair anyway. A single cable replacement on one side can sometimes come in lower, but if the drum has any groove wear at all, we recommend doing the pair. The parts are cheap compared to a second service call six months later.

Every quote is a written price before any work starts. The number we give you is the number on the invoice, no surprise line items for “extra labor.” That’s the Kingswell standard we work under, and it’s been that way since 2001. The repair itself is covered by the 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the cable or drum fails within a year of the install, we come back and make it right at no charge. That’s in writing on every job we do.

We also stock parts for LiftMaster and Chamberlain doors, so if you have a second door with a different brand, we can usually handle it on the same visit.

DIY or Call Us?

Here’s the honest version. You can safely look at the cable and drum yourself. Stand off to the side, don’t get under the door, and inspect the cable for fraying. You can check whether the drum has a visible groove. You can confirm which side has failed and whether the door is still on its tracks. That’s useful information to have when you call.

What you shouldn’t do is attempt the replacement yourself. The cable carries the door’s tension, and working with it properly requires releasing that tension safely, securing the door in place, and doing the swap without getting a hand or a face in the path of the hardware. We have been doing this work in Dallas long enough to have seen the aftermath of well-meaning attempts, and most of them end with a bent track, a broken roller, or a door that comes down hard when the clamp slips. Tell me what it’s doing, and I’ll tell you what it needs. No guesswork, no runaround. Then we’ll handle it. Call us at (361) 240-9428 and we’ll get someone out.
